For her new exhibition, Deborah DeWit continues to consider the human experience and moments in time through natural and figurative subjects rendered in luminous oil paintings. This new body of work juxtaposes interior and exterior environments, using real world imagery to create narratives that reflect the mind body relationship and how our experiences in the natural world shape the way we think. Architectural elements like windows & thresholds explore these connections between inner and outer realities both physically and philosophically. DeWit’s metaphoric compositions include depictions of people in the local community and what they do in the day-to-day as well as scenes conglomerated from her home-studio-property. As the artist states:
“This group of paintings reflects my ideas on the subject of how our senses interact with nature to feed our imagination and our intellect, and how we cross thresholds from the real world to the meaning of things.”
Deborah DeWit is a well-known artist residing on Oregon’s North Coast. Her mature painting style has developed over the course of her lengthy career, which began as a photographer in late 1970’s. DeWit now has several books published on her work, highlighting overarching themes in photography, writing, oil painting and pastels. DeWit’s artwork expresses autobiographical subjects to create symbolic imagery through the interplay of indoor and outdoor environments to elevate her sensitive and thought-provoking compositions into a realm where real and imagined space meet.
