2018 Plein Air Workshops

Make plans now to attend one of six workshops to be held during the week leading up to the 2018 Plein Air & More Art Festival. Come out to paint or sculpt and then stay for all of the festivities over the weekend. The village and beaches will be filled with artists capturing the beauty of the area and galleries will be overflowing with art.

Register now! All registrations are made directly with the workshop leaders and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. They will also supply you with the list of supplies you will need to bring with you.

Mike Rangner

“Two Days Working in Plein Air”

Wednesday, June 20-Thursday June 21

For Mike, painting is a life long quest.  Every time he sets a brush to canvas he works to express an emotion either through the image he’s been moved by or the challenge of light, value and shapes before him.  An Oregon native, he has enjoyed a successful career as a professional illustrator for more than 20 years, working with clients including Avia, Standard Insurance, Nike, the Oregon Zoo, among others.  His diverse body of oil paintings includes landscapes across the Pacific Northwest…the Columbia River Gorge, Easter Oregon, the Oregon Coast and the rich farmlands of the Mid-Willamette valley.

His workshop will begin each day with a basic introduction to the history and the current surges of this form of expression. He will show you with demos the basics of starting a painting while discussing line, shape, value and light.  His goal is to open you up to the challenges and pleasure of expressing yourself through painting the landscape. All levels of experience are welcome.

Gretha Lindwood

“Exploring Nature with Soft Pastels”

Wednesday, June 20-Thursday, June 21

Using soft pastel sticks, powdered pigments from the earth compressed to fit her hand, Gretha Lindwood makes her marks on the dry surface of artist sandpaper to record impressions of our natural world. The use of vibrant color and strong design are hallmarks of the artist’s work developed during her 30-year career as an illustrator and graphic designer.  Often an invited guest artist or juried artist, Lindwood has won many awards in plein air events. Some of the numerous honors for her pastel work include Laguna Plein Air Painters Association Best of Plein Air “First Place,” Carmel Art Festival “People’s Choice” and “Best Pastel,” and Paint the Peninsula “Best Waterscape.” Her work can also be seen in six art galleries in Oregon and Washington.

During her two day workshop you will learn to express your impressions of the natural world using soft pastels.  Students will apply the principals of color, value and design in this fun, informative class.  Demonstrations and individual instruction.

Hazel and Brand Schlesinger

“Beginning and Beyond”

Wednesday, June 20-Thursday June 21

This class is taught by a mother/son team.  Hazel (winner of the “2017 People’s Choice Award” during the Plein Air & More Arts Festival) discovered her passion for oil painting growing up on the Oregon coast and was later inspired by the Mediterranean countryside.  She works with a palette of predominantly warm, vivid colors and large, rhythmic brush strokes.  Her paintings are representational of actual locations, but are approached with more contemporary or abstract realism.

Her son Brand was inspired by his mother’s art at an early age and he has enjoyed painting side by side with her, especially during their travels to the Provence region of France.

Come join the fun of painting on the beach with the two of them.  This two-day Plein Air Workshop will focus on many quick painting sketches for beginners and beyond.  Participants will leave with several small studies.

All levels of experience welcome.

Michael Orwick

“Learning the Language of Light and Color”

Michael says that as a painter, the effects of light and atmosphere are what he remembers about a location and what inspires him most.  Light transforms the ordinary or even the beautiful into the exceptional.  His quest is to capture these fleeting moments and help people see things again through new eyes. Last year, he, his wife and now 12-year-old daughter took a year off from “real life” to travel the world.  They visited 21 countries and painted with over 500 inspiring children from various orphanages and schools as part of their cause, which they called “Studio Everywhere.”  Since returning he has been creating works that celebrate this special chapter in their lives.

This  three day workshop is going to be full of Michael’s favorite color mixes and his tips and tricks to help take your paintings to the next level. Experience hands-on the keys to color relationships and harmony that portray emotion.  Learn new color schemes while exploring your personal color response through Hue, Temperature, Value and Saturation.

Josh Henrie

“The Basics of Sculpture”

Wednesday June 20-Friday June 22

Josh pursued his art career at Washington State University, and later at Cornish, in Seattle, WA. He recently was featured in Southwest Art Magazine as “12 sculpture artist to buy now” article. Following his path as a stone carver, he carved, experimented and slowly formed his own Northwest style. As he carves, his deep passion of the raw beauty of the Pacific Coast springs to life in his artwork. Unfinished chisel marks, raw stone and smooth detail work resemble his coastal surroundings. Bringing out the soul of the stone and capturing its inner self, makes you almost hear the heartbeat.

He is planning a 3 day workshop  focusing on the basics of making a sculpture and on texture, contrast, and composition. By the end of the workshop each will have a finished sculpture to take home with pride.

Any level of experience welcome.

Linda Gebhart

Two classes:  “Mini Watercolors” and “Land and Seascapes in Watercolor”

Linda retired to Cannon Beach in 2014 with a fervent desire to artistically represent the beauty she discovered during her world travels. She quickly discovered her biggest passion was in painting the seascapes and landscapes surrounding her on the coast..

9:30-11:30 a.m.  Mini Watercolors

Join this Northwest coast artist, as she walks you through a relaxed two-hour introductory watercolor adventure.  Create your own miniature version of Cannon Beach, Haystack Rock, clouds, trees, waves and sand! Participants will learn a few watercolor basics and take away a matted piece suitable for framing.

1:00-3:00 p.m. Land and Seascapes in Watercolor

This is Linda’s follow up two-hour watercolor workshop. All participants will pick up some watercolor basics, while morning workshop attendees will have the opportunity to build on their skills with a focus on composition, color and natural elements on larger paper.

All levels of students are welcome in each class, as they are designed for beginners and beyond. Bring gear for working outdoors (sunhat, sunglasses, sunscreen etc).

Materials will be provided for class use.
