Natural. Organic. Wild.

It’s time we asked … “What’s in my food?”

My Fork in the Road

It is way past due that we all start looking at what we eat. With the recent food scares in the food industry, eating organics and natural products and the opportunity to support local farmers and suppliers is just the right thing to do. After discussions with my wife Debbie, her suggestion to offer vegetarian and healthier dishes sparked the beginning. My love of cooking still goes on but now in a different direction. I call it “My fork in the road”.

With over 25 years in the restaurant business the awakening to simplify my lifestyle to a less stressful environment and to incorporate a healthier diet using natural, organic and wild ingredients really did make sense. I cooked for over 7 years at the Lil’ Bayou in Seaside and before that a restaurant in New York. It was my dream for many years, however, at one point I had to say that other things should take priority.

The challenge in starting Sweet Basil’s was to create a lunch and dinner menus that offered healthy foods that still excited the palate. I think, and more importantly our guests have found, that eating healthier offers and excitement in taste as well as an endless selection of dishes.

Sweet Basil’s Café was conceived by a change in lifestyle and diet of the chef and owner John Sowa, a Cajun/Creole trained chef.

CANNON BEACH – If you live in Cannon Beach, Arch Cape, Neahkahnie or Manzanita, you have probably noticed real estate “for sale” signs emblazoned with a familiar name cropping up. … Expect to see a lot more of them.
The signs point to the emergence of a new local real estate firm ‘RE/MAX Coastal Advantage’, based in Cannon Beach and independently owned and operated by Alaina and Marty Giguiere (pronounced Ja-Gear). “Even though the company is new, the expertise is not,” said Alaina, who has been a top-selling real estate agent in the region for more than 12 years.
She was with Windermere Manzanita for over 10 years, and then joined Kamali Sotheby’s as the managing principal broker. She remained with Kamali Sotheby’s for two years before she and Marty launched ‘RE/MAX Coastal Advantage’. “I know that if you work hard, no matter what the market, you can be successful,” she said. “If ever there was a time to do to start our own real estate company, now is it.
The market is improving. While there is still a larger-than-normal inventory of homes on the north Oregon coast, properties are selling due to great interest rates and stabilizing prices. Buyer confidence is coming back.

Motivation to move to Cannon Beach began in early the 1990’s when the owners, Bob Neroni and Lenore Emery first traveled through the beach community on the way to see Lenore’s family in Seattle. After visiting the quaint artsy town, the two daydreamed about the many ways they might live where they loved to visit. And visit they did, every year there after until finally, after building their own beach bungalow in Cannon Beach, they moved in full time spring of 2004.

The idea of opening EVOO was very appealing. Both Bob and Lenore had spent many years teaching or training in the food industry. Both admit that teaching the craft of cooking is one of the most satisfying experiences of their career. When the former little beach cottage became available on the main commercial street in Cannon Beach, their motion to the ocean gained momentum.
