It’s hard to imagine a more picturesque setting than this small north Oregon Coast beach town. For years, the spectacular natural beauty of Cannon Beach has beckoned artists from around the world out of their studios to capture unique elements of this landscape “en plein air” or “in the open air”. To celebrate this challenging artistic style and the work of the artists, the Cannon Beach Gallery Group is presenting the 5th Annual Plein Air & More festival. Scheduled for June 28-30, the event will include 25 artists represented by a dozen of Cannon Beach’s art galleries

The featured artists will create art on location throughout the town and on the beach on Friday and Saturday with their work showcased at gallery receptions on Saturday evening. They will also participate in a group show at the Cannon Beach Chamber Building Friday evening. The events are free and will take place rain or shine.

Maps detailing the location of each artist will be available at all Cannon Beach Gallery Group locations and the Chamber of Commerce. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions of the artists while they work, or simply observe.

Several new exquisite bronze sculptures by Melissa Cooper have landed at Bronze Coast Gallery. ‘Morning Companions’ has two gray doves sitting atop a three-sided vessel, ‘Yellow Warbler’ is perched on a branch above a small round pot, and ‘Cherry Blossoms’ depicts two song birds attached to the side of a warm patinaed vase adorned with cherry blossoms. ‘Winter Berries’ shows a plump robin holding holly berries on top of a square perch. ‘Wine Warbler’ arrived here during Savor Cannon Beach and is a clever and attractive stopper for that opened bottle of wine. After working for years in an art foundry, Cooper possesses a unique blend of technical expertise and artist’s vision. Her sculptures are known for their combination of graceful shape and, as the artist puts it, “fluffy and robust” charm. An impressionistic style suits Cooper well for a creature’s body. When it comes to the face, however, detail is key to infusing the animal with spirit and personality.

Frequently utilizing up-cycled materials to create a polished finished product, pieces from the RootsAndWings line incorporate gold, silver, copper, gemstones, and pearls. The result is a jewelry line that reflects Ms. Mersereau’s philosophy to make her life, “in as many ways as possible, a beautiful, creative act.” The Verde Show also features a juried component to be curated by Royal Nebeker, former director of the art department at Clatsop Community College and internationally exhibited painter and printmaker. Artwork for the juried show should utilize natural or up-cycled materials and/or a green palette. Submissions will be accepted at the Gallery on April 4, 2013 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Gallery will also host an Artist’s Talk on Earth Day, April 20th at 4 p.m. in which artists who have work in the show will reflect on the question, “What does it mean to work green as an artist?”

Since 1978, Hanne and Harry Greaver have operated the Greaver Gallery in Cannon Beach. Their fine art graphics, drawings and paintings have been included in national juried exhibits in the US and Canada, with over 30 two-person shows to their credit. Their son Peter will exhibit detailed watercolors while their daughter Lotte will show original drawings. Thirteen-year old grandson Connor Kealey will make Cannon Beach Gallery history as one of the youngest artists ever to be showcased in an invitational group show at the gallery. Connor will also exhibit his jewelry designs, which are currently available at the Greaver Gallery. An Artists’ Reception will be held at the gallery on Saturday, March 2, from 5pm – 7pm, featuring Paul Greaver performing original compositions on guitar. Light appetizers and libations will be served.
